Solvent-Based Adhesive Resin Feeding

Solvent-based adhesive production often requires granular or pelletized resins to be dissolved and blended with liquid components inside mixing vessels. In these applications, resin feeding must do more than move material from one point to another: the correct resin grade must be selected, weighed according to the formulation and introduced into the mixer without compromising the safety conditions created by the solvent environment. VOLDE develops complete resin feeding systems from bag and big bag intake to vacuum conveying, gravimetric batch preparation and mixer charging. Each system is engineered around resin characteristics, batch quantity, mixer configuration, conveying distance and hazardous-area requirements

| From Bag to Weighed Vacuum Receiver

Granular resins are introduced through enclosed bag or big bag discharge stations and conveyed under vacuum toward the mixer area. Because the conveying line operates under negative pressure, resin transfer can remain enclosed while dust release at transfer points is limited.

At the receiving end, VACUMATE can function not only as the product-air separation unit but also as part of the weighing process. The collected resin is prepared according to the active batch recipe before being released into the mixer or dissolution vessel.

For plants working with several resin grades, dedicated pickup points or automatically selected conveying routes can be used. This allows different materials to serve one or more mixers without turning resin preparation into a separate manual handling operation.

Typical system architecture may combine bag and big bag intake, VACUMATE weighed receivers, load-cell weighing, automatic resin selection and mixer-side discharge within a single enclosed material path.

    | Safe Resin Charging in Solvent Areas

    Introducing dry resin into a vessel containing flammable solvent requires the feeding equipment and mixer sequence to be considered as one process.

    Where required by the plant classification, VOLDE configures the relevant vacuum receivers, valves, electrical equipment and instrumentation for ATEX / Ex applications. Grounding, equipotential bonding and enclosed mixer connections are incorporated according to the project-specific protection concept.

    In processes using nitrogen inerting, the resin charging sequence can also be linked to mixer conditions. Resin discharge may be permitted only after the required vessel status has been confirmed.

    This can include

     • ATEX / Ex equipment for the classified area
     • Nitrogen inerting and oxygen-monitoring interface
     • Mixer-ready and resin-discharge interlocks
     • Grounding and equipotential bonding
     • Enclosed filtration and venting arrangements

    The final protection concept is defined according to the solvent system, mixer design, resin characteristics and hazardous-area assessment rather than applying the same arrangement to every adhesive plant.

      | Recipe-Controlled Resin Feeding

      In adhesive production, resin type and quantity are part of the formulation itself. For this reason, conveying and weighing must follow the active recipe rather than operate as an independent utility.

      The PLC/SCADA system can coordinate resin selection, vacuum transfer, target weight and mixer discharge within the same batch sequence. The operator sees which resin is requested, how much has been transferred and whether the mixer is ready to receive the material.

      For multi-product plants, the same infrastructure can serve different adhesive formulations and different mixers. Resin consumption and actual batch weights can also be recorded as part of the production history, providing a clear link between material preparation and the finished adhesive batch.
