Welding Electrode Flux Batching House

Where Electrode Quality Begins with the Formula

The performance of a welding electrode starts with its coating formulation. Rutile, basic and cellulosic electrodes require different combinations of mineral powders, ferroalloys, metallic powders, cellulose and specialty additives — often in quantities ranging from major ingredients to very small recipe additions. VOLDE designs and implements automated Flux Batching Houses that manage this entire preparation stage from raw material storage to the accurately prepared batch. Material identification, gravimetric dosing, recipe execution and production traceability are integrated into one process architecture, providing the control required for a broad range of electrode formulations

| Raw Material Handling Built Around the Formula

Welding electrode coating recipes bring together materials with very different physical characteristics. Dense iron powders, free-flowing minerals, poor-flowing fine powders, lightweight cellulose and low-percentage alloying components cannot all be handled effectively with the same storage and feeding concept.

For this reason, VOLDE evaluates each ingredient individually and selects the bin geometry, discharge arrangement and feeder technology according to its flow behaviour, bulk density and required dosing range.

Raw materials supplied in bags or big bags are introduced into dedicated storage bins and made available to the automatic batching system. The modular architecture allows a large number of ingredients to be managed centrally and gives manufacturers the flexibility to run different electrode families from the same raw material infrastructure.

    | From Major Ingredients to Critical Small Additions

Electrode formulations can contain large quantities of base minerals alongside ferroalloys and functional additives required in much smaller amounts. Accurate preparation therefore depends on selecting the appropriate dosing principle for each weight range rather than treating every ingredient in the same way.

VOLDE combines gravimetric feeders and weighing systems within a common recipe-controlled architecture. The automation system selects the required raw material, controls the dosing sequence and compares the actual weight with the target defined by the active formulation.

In an implemented VOLDE system, 42 different powder raw materials are managed from a central batching house, with individual dosing quantities ranging from approximately 100 grams to 40 kilograms. The same infrastructure supports batch sizes between 100 and 1,000 kg, demonstrating the flexibility required to manage both major ingredients and critical low-quantity additions.

      | Flexible Batching for Multiple Electrode Formulations

Electrode manufacturers rarely work with a single formulation. Different electrode types, grades and production campaigns require frequent recipe changes and different combinations of raw materials.

A central Flux Batching House allows these formulations to be prepared automatically without creating a separate raw material line for every product. Multiple production lines can be supplied from the same ingredient infrastructure while maintaining independent recipes and production records.

In the VOLDE reference application, two production lines can operate simultaneously with different formulations. Weighed ingredients are collected as a defined batch and transferred to the next production stage according to the selected process sequence.

The result is a flexible production architecture that can accommodate changing formulations, different batch sizes and an expanding raw material portfolio without losing control of the recipe.

        | Every Formula Has a History

In electrode production, traceability is as important as weighing accuracy. Knowing which raw material entered a batch, in what quantity and under which recipe provides the foundation for repeatable production and effective quality control.

        | Recipe Management & Full Batch Traceability

VOLDE integrates the complete batching house with PLC/SCADA automation. Recipes, target quantities, dosing sequences and production parameters are managed centrally, while operator permissions can be structured according to responsibility levels.

Barcode verification can be used during raw material loading to confirm that each bag or big bag is being introduced into the correct storage bin. Mechanical safeguards and software interlocks provide additional protection against incorrect material loading.

The system can record target and actual weights, raw material consumption, recipe revisions, batch numbers, operator actions and production history. Where required, these data can be exchanged with ERP, inventory, production-planning and quality-management systems.

By combining material-specific handling, gravimetric dosing, automated recipe execution and full traceability, VOLDE turns the Flux Batching House into a controlled production platform for modern welding electrode manufacturing.
