Calcite Feeding for Bituminous Insulation Membranes

Reliable Mineral Feeding from Silo to Mixer

Calcite is used as a mineral filler in bituminous waterproofing membrane formulations and must be supplied to the production line in accordance with each mixer recipe. Its fine powder structure and flow behaviour, combined with the high-temperature environment around bitumen processing, require a well-engineered approach to storage, conveying and weighing. VOLDE integrates bulk calcite storage, dense-phase pneumatic conveying, intermediate bins and dedicated weighing hoppers into a single feeding system. The complete process is designed around the characteristics of the mineral, production capacity and mixer layout, providing each line with an independent, recipe-based calcite supply

| Bulk Storage, Dense Phase Conveying & Material Flow

In the VOLDE reference system, calcite delivered by bulk tanker is stored in a 70 m³ skirted silo located outside the production building. From there, the material is transferred to the production area using the DENSPLUS dense-phase pneumatic conveying system.

Lower conveying velocities provide an effective solution for transferring fine mineral powders through enclosed pipelines while reducing unnecessary mechanical stress on the conveying line. Calcite is delivered to two filtered intermediate bins located above the production area, creating a dedicated material reserve for each mixer line.

Reliable discharge is considered throughout the complete material path. Silo and bunker geometry, outlet dimensions and flow-assist equipment are selected according to the characteristics of the calcite in order to support stable feeding toward the weighing system.

The system can incorporate

 • Bulk tanker silo filling
 • Skirted calcite storage silo
 • DENSPLUS dense-phase pneumatic conveying
 • Filtered intermediate bins
 • Material-specific silo discharge equipment
 • Level monitoring and automatic conveying sequences

This architecture separates bulk storage from the actual dosing process while keeping calcite readily available close to the production mixers.

    | Weighed Mixer Feeding & Process Automation

Each mixer is supplied through its own dedicated weighing hopper. When the production line requests calcite, material is transferred from the intermediate bin until the target weight defined by the active recipe is reached. The weighed quantity is then discharged to the mixer according to the production sequence.

Two mixer lines can therefore operate independently from the same central calcite storage and conveying infrastructure, with separate weighing cycles and recipe requirements.

Particular attention is also given to the interface with the hot bitumen process. Equipment positioning, discharge connections, filtration and process isolation are arranged to limit the influence of heat and bitumen vapours on load cells, filters and powder-handling equipment.

PLC automation coordinates conveying requests, intermediate-bin levels, weighing sequences and mixer demands. Actual weights, calcite consumption, alarms and production data can be monitored and recorded, with SCADA or higher-level system integration available where required.

VOLDE combines bulk storage, DENSPLUS dense-phase conveying and dedicated gravimetric mixer feeding into an integrated calcite handling system developed specifically for bituminous waterproofing membrane production.
